Cornwall RLFC

Match Preview – Keighley (a)

March 15, 2024

Cornwall RLFC start the 2024 Betfred League 1 campaign with an away trip to relegated Keighley Cougars, who will be looking to bounce back to the second tier at the first attempt.

For the Choughs, it is the first league outing since a memorable 18-12 win over Rochdale Hornets on the final day of regular fixtures in 2023.

Liam Whitton’s try, with the final play of a pulsating Memorial Ground clash, saw Cornwall prevail for the first time over a team from rugby league’s traditional heartland areas.

Outstanding player of the match Tom Ashton was involved in all three of Cornwall’s tries, which were scored by Whitton, George Mitchell and Cameron Brown. Australian half-back Brown converted all three while Rochdale, who led 8-0 early on failed to convert any of their three scores.

Dan Brewin’s effort hauled the Hornets level with less than 15 minutes to play, but crucially, Dave Hewitt couldn’t add the extras before Whitton’s late party piece.

Squad Selection

Cornwall RLFC head coach Mike Abbott has named his 21-man squad for Sunday’s clash against the Cougars.

Josh Hartshorne serves the first of his three game ban picked up after he was sent off in the Choughs’ recent Betfred Challenge Cup tie against York Acorn.

We’ve Met Before:

The Choughs last travelled to Cougar Park for a round 15 clash in 2022.

Keighley were unbeaten in the league and would go on to win promotion to the Championship with a 100 per cent winning record.

On a blistering hot day, they overpowered a spirited Cornwall side who saw both Tom Ashton and Myles Tate harshly sent to the sin bin. The match was also overshadowed by a serious concussion injury suffered by Cornwall hooker Sam Gilder.
