Local Sides To Play Swinton Curtain Raiser

July 19, 2022

Touch rugby sides Truro Trojans and the Falmouth Raptors will provide a curtain-raiser for Cornwall RLFC’s Betfred League 1 match against Swinton Lions on Saturday.

In the past two years, touch rugby in the Duchy has gone from strength to strength with the number of Cornish players more than quadrupling since the pandemic.

The region has four established teams – Truro, Falmouth, FXU Raiders and the Hedgehogs. The teams are currently in the process of establishing a weekly league which will be launched in September of this year.

The development of the region can be keenly seen through a record breaking 12 players being selected for the South West Saxons regional teams this year. This is particularly impressive considering last year was the first time players from Cornwall had been selected to play for the region.

Of the two teams that will take to the field at the Mem on Saturday, Truro is the region’s most established club. They recently competed at the England Touch Development Series and are the first Cornish side to enter a national competition.

Falmouth burst onto the scene two years ago and have quickly shown that they are there to rival the other touch clubs. The Smugglers have a fantastic youth section which is continuing to develop at pace.

The two local teams have a great rivalry and as such matches between the two are keenly contested meaning this match won’t be one to miss.

Commenting on the opportunity to showcase the talents of players in Cornwall, touch rugby regional lead for Cornwall Lexie Williams, said:

“Truro Trojans and Falmouth Raptors are delighted to be sharing the pitch today with the Choughs. We look forward to working closely with Cornwall RLFC moving forward to develop both touch rugby and rugby league talent within the region.”
