Cornwall RLFC can confirm that full-back Liam Whitton has left the club due to personal reasons.

Whitton, who holds heritage number one for the Choughs, made his debut for the club in its very first game away to North Wales Crusaders in April 2022.

A product of the academy system at Super League giants Leeds Rhinos, Whitton scored a try on his debut and after Cornwall’s maiden campaign, was named Supporters’ Player of the Year.

Last year, Whitton captained the side after Jack Ray stepped down and he started every match, scoring the winning try against Rochdale Hornets, with the final play of the final home game.

“I loved every minute of being at the club,” Whitton told cornwallrlfc.co.uk. “I don’t regret moving down (to Cornwall) but circumstances away from my rugby means I have moved back to Yorkshire.

“It has been an unreal experience playing rugby league in Cornwall as there aren’t any places in Yorkshire where you can go to the beach to do recovery sessions and things like that.

“It is a very tight-knit club and if we weren’t playing rugby together, we would always be together as a group, either at work or doing other things.

“I will always look back on my time with Cornwall fondly. I captained the side in some pretty special wins last year but the Rochdale Hornets game is my favourite.

“The try against Rochdale meant an awful lot to the players, staff and the fans too. But it meant more to me because I had spent some time in the sinbin during that match.

“Moving forward, I wish nothing but success for the club and I am forever grateful for the opportunity Cornwall have given me.”

Everyone at the club wishes Liam the very best for the future within rugby league and we thank him for his valuable contribution to the club, in our short history to date.
