George Mitchell Signs New Cornwall Contract
January 16, 2024
Cornwall RLFC are delighted to announce that George Mitchell has signed a new one-year contract, keeping him at the Memorial Ground for the 2024 Betfred league 1 campaign.
Cornish born and bred, Mitchell impressed in the club’s second open trial which was held in November 2022.
He was rewarded with his first professional rugby league contract for the 2023 campaign. And the Penryn man made his competitive debut for the Choughs in the side’s narrow 20–14 defeat to Rochdale Mayfield in the Betfred Challenge Cup.
Mitchell picked up a deserved Player of the Match award in the away reverse at the hands of Dewsbury, but he was then struck down with a hamstring injury which kept him out for a number of weeks.
He returned to play a starring role in the victory over London Skolars and in the Coughs’ final two home matches against Oldham and Rochdale Hornets, Mitchell crossed the whitewash for his first tries in Cornwall colours.
“My first season in rugby league was a real eye-opener because I played in a number of positions,” he told cornwallrlfc.co.uk.
“I was settling into the squad and it took me a while to adjust to being in, then out, injured. I played in the back row and the wing but everything I did last year I really enjoyed.
“I have never had the chance to represent Cornwall before so to do it with our rugby league side has been class.
“I am going to keep training as hard as I can to keep the shirt and I want to pull it on every time Cornwall RLFC play.”
Meanwhile, Cornwall RLFC head coach Mike Abbott, added: “George finished the season really well and he gives us options across the board both in the backs and forwards.
“His tries that he scored against Oldham and Rochdale were special moments for both George personally and for the club because of his proud Cornish roots.
“I am sure he will continue to progress in a Cornwall shirt and we can’t wait to see what he can do in 2024.”
