Dimech Stars in Malta Victories
September 28, 2023
Kaine Dimech played a starring role for Malta in their recent Medieval Shield matches against Montenegro and Bulgaria, with the Knights prevailing in both.
Malta’s first shield clash saw the Knights travel to Montenegro in a game played at Stadion u Parku, home of Tivat based football team FK Arsenal.
Dimech started the game at loose forward and he bagged his fifth try for the Knights in a comfortable 34-10 win.
Malta led 20-0 at the interval but in the second 40 minutes, Montenegro fought back to give the visitors a fright before they kicked on to claim the spoils.
Dimech’s individual contribution saw the former Medway Dragons amateur claim the Player of the Match award. His brother, Reece, also crossed the whitewash.
Fresh from victory over Montenegro, the Knights then hosted Bulgaria at the Marsa Sports Ground.
Malta were able to call on the services of Barrow Raiders’ half-back Jarrod Sammut who, in a remarkable show of commitment to his national side, played in the match, before flying back to these shores to play in his club side’s Betfred Championship finale against York Knights.
Sammut was simply too hot for the Bulgarian side to handle as he scored almost half Malta’s points in a 78-0 win.
The 36-year-old scored three tries and thirteen conversions from as many attempts with Cornwall’s Dimech once again on the scoresheet.
