Cornwall are delighted to announce the signing of Matt Ross for the forthcoming 2024 Betfred League 1 campaign.

The 31-year-old plied his trade in the third tier for London Skolars last term. Previously, Ross, a loose forward, has also played for relegated Keighley Cougars and former Super League outfit Toulouse Olympique.

Keighley born, Ross has also gained representative honours with England students. And earlier this year, alongside fellow Chough Harry Boots, he played for Wales against Cumbria in a representative fixture as part of Kyle Amor’s testimonial.

Ross is eligible for Wales through his Welsh father and he will be keen to get more international appearances under his belt whilst at the Memorial Ground.

“Looking at Cornwall as an opposing player, I was really impressed with what the club were doing,” Ross told cornwallrlfc.co.uk.

“I am a bit of an expansionist myself despite my traditional rugby league upbringing and Cornwall in the league structure, despite a tough first year, is really good for the sport.

“Last season was much better for the team and they made people sit up and take notice with some more wins. I wanted to be a part of what Cornwall is building and although it was disappointing to see London Skolars fold, I am appreciative of the opportunity they gave me.

“I have played at this level for a number of years now and I hope my experience can help Cornwall because I have been there and done it in League 1.”

Meanwhile, Cornwall RLFC head coach Mike Abbott, added: “Matt has an excellent pedigree in this comp and he caused us problems when we faced him.

“He’s a direct runner who gives us further strength in the back row positions and with the season slightly longer than 2023 in terms of games we will play, depth to our squad will be vital.”
