Cornwall Sign Jack Sander For 2024 Campaign

January 21, 2024

Cornwall RLFC are delighted to announce the signing of Jack Sander, for the 2024 Betfred League 1 campaign.

The 24-year-old cut his formative rugby teeth with local rugby union side Wadebridge Camels. Sander progressed from the mini and junior section through to the first team at Egloshayle before studying at Oxford University, where he first tasted rugby league.

Playing at centre, Sander represented the Dark Blues in their traditional Varsity match against Cambridge. He also represented Oxford on a European tour where they played and defeated the Polish national side.

“I grew up in Cornwall with zero chance of playing rugby league,” Sander told cornwallrlfc.co.uk. “But now there is a real hub for rugby league here in the Duchy so it was a no-brainer, after my experience playing at University, to get involved with Cornwall.

“I love the physicality of rugby league and I am excited to be around players who have grown up playing the game. I look forward to learning off my team mates and coaches in a professional capacity.”

Meanwhile, Cornwall RLFC head coach Mike Abbott, added: “We had a look at Jack at the back end of last season and he travelled with us to a couple of away games too.

“We were impressed with him on the pitch but like all of our players, we need to look at more than that. Jack being based in Cornwall meant we could offer him the chance to show us what he was like off the field too, and his attitude to learn and develop as a player has been first class.

“He has rugby league experience from playing the game at University and I’ve seen those Varsity games, they are high quality matches played by good players.

“So Jack comes with a decent pedigree and we look forward to seeing what he can do in a Cornwall shirt in 2024.”
