AJ Boardman, in action for Rochdale – Jackie Meredith

Cornwall RLFC are delighted to announce the two-week loan signing of utility forward AJ Boardman from divisional rivals Rochdale Hornets.

The 34-year-old has made one appearance for the Spotland outfit this term, in their 1895 Cup reverse on home soil against local rivals Halifax Panthers.

Boardman was something of a late bloomer in professional rugby league, joining Hunslet in 2020 from amateur side Dewsbury Celtic.

After his first season in League 1 was halted by the covid-19 pandemic, Boardman managed a handful of appearances in the following campaign before joining Midlands Hurricanes for 2022.

He made 15 appearances for the Birmingham based outfit, who rebranded from Coventry Bears, scoring twice in games against Swinton and Cornwall.

Last term, Boardman joined Rochdale, reuniting with his former Hunslet coach Gary Thornton, playing eight times and scoring twice.

“AJ helps bolster our pack options in an area where injuries and unavailability have once again left us short,” head coach Mike Abbott told cornwallrlfc.co.uk.

“I’d like to thank Gary (Thornton) for his assistance in letting us have AJ for a couple of weeks.

“We’ve got Bootsy (Harry Boots) who isn’t available for the Midlands game while Kaine Dimech is out with his knee. Matt Ross is a few weeks away while we can’t use Courage (Mkuhlani) against his parent club.

“AJ will give us an option in the middle and back row, depending on how we want to go with the team against Midlands.”
