Cornwall RLFC have completed the signing of much sought after scrum-half Adam Rusling for the 2023 Betfred League 1 season.

The 19-year-old spent time on loan at the Memorial Ground last season from parent club Hull Kingston Rovers.

Hailing from Humberside and beginning his rugby league career at West Hull, Rusling caught the eye of Super League outfit Castleford Tigers and subsequently moved to the Jungle on scholarship terms.

Rusling then progressed to the Tigers’ academy set-up and regularly trained with the first team. During the 2021 Super League season, Rusling made his top-flight bow for the Tigers against Salford Red Devils but moved back to his native Hull with Rovers a year ago.

Playing mainly in the Robins’ reserve side during the last campaign, Rusling gained valuable first team experience with Cornwall and scored four tries during the club’s inaugural professional campaign.

Released by Rovers after just one season at Craven Park, Cornwall have moved quickly to secure Rusling’s services for next year.

“I came down to Cornwall last season and played a few games for the club and I really enjoyed it,” Rusling told cornwallrlfc.co.uk.

“Everyone made me feel really welcome and it made me want to come back once I knew I was leaving Hull KR. I see Cornwall as a club with huge potential and I see myself being part of the club’s journey.

“Although I am only young at 19, I have been part of the environment at Super League clubs and hopefully I can bring some of the experience to things like pre-season and training for Cornwall and we can grow as a team.

“I have looked at how players like Liam Whitton – who has had a similar journey to me in terms of coming through the academy set-up at a Super league club then joining Cornwall – have excelled after joining the club and I want similar.

“I know there is a bit of pressure on me as a half-back because we’re the players that marshall the team around the pitch but this kind of challenge really excites me and I can’t wait to get started.”

With Rusling’s signature for 2023 now safely in Cornwall’s grasp, club general manager John Beach added: “ As soon as we knew that Adam was leaving Hull KR we wanted him to join for next season.

“Although Adam is only young, he demonstrated his enormous potential during his time on loan with the club. The fact that he comes to us straight from a Super League club and having played in the Super League also, this will be of huge benefit to our players who are either new to the game of rugby league or rugby league at this level.”
