Cornwall RLFC Sign Sam Snell

January 27, 2022

Cornwall RLFC can confirm the signing of forward Sam Snell for the 2022 Betfred League One season.

Raised in the east of Cornwall, the 31-year-old becomes the eighth signing we have made for our inaugural campaign, which begins on April 2 with an away clash against North Wales Crusaders. Eight days later, Cornwall will run out at the Memorial Ground in front of our own fans for the very first time with Midlands Hurricanes the visitors.

Snell has dipped his toe into rugby league waters previously whilst serving in the forces, along with appearances for Cornish side Saltash Essayons and the Cornwall county side too.

The bulk of his rugby career has been playing union however with Snell’s clubs including Launceston, Brixham and Okehampton. Keen to make an impression in the 13-player code, Snell caught the eye in the club’s recent open player trial and subsequently agreed terms for the forthcoming term.

“As everyone has said, it is a great opportunity by bringing rugby league down to Cornwall,” said Snell. There are teams that have got the ball rolling previously but now Cornwall have come in, it will only benefit the sport.

“Some of the lads that rocked up at the trial really stood up and now the club have signed them. I can’t wait to get to know them and work with them.

“Over the years I have suffered a few injuries and you’re dying to put your boots on when you can’t. As long as I keep fit, I think I can mix it with the rest of the boys.

“Growing up, rugby has been massive round down the county – more west than east. I have always found the eastern boys have to do more to get noticed. I think any person that lives here and has moved here, you buy into rugby. Because of that, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t buzzing to be putting on the jersey. I will put my heart on my sleeve and do my best.”

General manager of the Cornwall RLFC Gareth Reid added that Snell’s work rate was a big factor in agreeing terms with another successful trialist.

“We are happy to have Sam join the club for the upcoming season off the back of his performance at our open trials,” he enthused.

“He looks a strong ball carrier and defender that will gladly lead the charge up the middle of the park and, as a local Cornishman, he will wear the jersey with pride.”

Meanwhile, the Choughs’ head coach Neil Kelly says he is relishing the chance to work with Snell for the club’s debut season in professional rugby league.

“The signing of Sam further enhances our Cornish contingent at the club,” said Kelly. “I am really looking forward to working with him during our pre-season and then when the serious stuff starts in April.

“Sam is another versatile footballer that will give us some go forward when attacking and strength in defence too.”
