Cornwall RLFC have added another new recruit for the 2022 Betfred League 1 season with the signing of Harry Aaronson.

The 23-year-old arrives in Cornwall with a wealth of rugby league experience behind him, despite his tender years.

Oldham born, Aaronson had spells in the academy set-ups at both Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants. And after cutting his playing teeth with the two Super League heavyweights, he made his debut in the professional ranks at Swinton in 2015.

Aaronson, a full-back or winger by trade, opted to leave the Lions and joined Keighley Cougars whilst studying at Leeds University. After two years at Cougar Park, Aaronson returned to Swinton before joining his home town club Oldham on loan during 2019.

With the Roughyeds gaining promotion to the Championship for 2020, Aaronson made his move from Swinton permanent. He started Oldham’s opening two matches in the ill-fated 2020 campaign, before the covid-19 pandemic forced the rugby league season to pause with only the Super League restarting.

Aaronson left Oldham in August 2020 to pursue a career in recruitment and away from rugby league. However, speaking to cornwallrlfc.co.uk, he revealed joining a brand-new club has rekindled his love for the 13-man code.

He said: “Without this opportunity I was probably lost to the game because of my work commitments which meant an inability to train. The club have been really supportive and I am very grateful for the opportunity.

“It is a part of history to launch something new and be part of a new club. We have some good up and coming players from the local region, mixed with those from rugby league already. It’s a great proposition and I can’t wait to get started.

“I understand the reasons behind a club in Cornwall and I am fully behind spreading the game. With the raw talent we have, that’s very exciting, but you do need players with experience in the league we’re playing in itself.

“We also need experience of how to manage games and what to do in certain situations and I’m hoping to bring that to the team.”

Aaronson’s experience within rugby league’s professional ranks were certainly a key factor in signing for the Choughs with Cornwall RLFC’s general manager Gareth Reid predicting that this will be ‘invaluable’ for the club going forward.

“We are very pleased to have Harry join the club for the season ahead,” enthused Reid. “He has a great pedigree and good experience in the sport and provides great coverage across the back three.  “He’s fast with good footwork and an eye for the try line. His experience will prove invaluable for the team over the course of the season.”
