Cornwall Pair Bow Out of Challenge Cup
February 28, 2023
The Betfred Challenge Cup hopes of Cornwall duo Jack Ray and Nick Slaney ended last weekend with defeat in round two.
Both Cornish stars were in action for their respective forces sides with Ray representing the Royal Nay and Slaney the Royal Air Force.
Ray and his Navy ‘Brothers’ were handed a tough round two tie after defeating Barrow Island in round one with a trip to Cornwall’s Betfred League 1 rivals North Wales Crusaders.
Ray started the game at prop but the Colwyn Bay outfit were dominant throughout and were eventual 70-0 winners.
For Slaney, his RAF side were paired with National Conference League side York Acorn. In a tight match, Acorn prevailed 12-10 thanks to tries from Ryan Gallacher, Jordan Hyde and George Hunt.
In reply, the RAF crossed through Kieran Prescott and Slaney himself, who scored a stunning length of the field effort which ultimately proved to be in vain as his side bowed out.
Defeat of the RAF saw Acorn handed a plumb tie away to 2003 Challenge Cup winners Bradford Bulls while in the battle of the Crusaders, North Wales will travel to Thatto Heath.
