Club to Hold Open Player Trial

November 7, 2022

Cornwall RLFC are to once again hold an open player trial as preparations for the 2023 Betfred League 1 season continue apace.

The trial will be held at a venue to be confirmed on Saturday, November 19 starting at 10.00am. Similar in format to the trial which preceded the club’s first professional rugby league season, it is envisaged that the next crop of Cornish talent will be identified by head coach Mike Abbott and his staff.

Mainstays of the club’s class of 2022 Decarlo Trerise and Jake Lloyd were attendees of our first player trial whilst former Cornwall rugby union star Brad Howe first signed for the club after impressing in a mid-season trial period.

“The trial is open to anybody and everybody,” enthused Mem chief Abbott. “It will be tough and it will be demanding but we see this as an opportunity for boys to represent Cornwall.

“Last season we saw how the Cornish supporters backed our team, our players and the great game of rugby league. As I have said before, we are building something special and we want boys to sign up to something special.

“I will be looking to see what boys can do on the day and I’m particularly keen to see players who may not have made it yet, but have the commitment, desire and raw potential to do it with Cornwall RLFC.”

Cornwall RLFC general manager John Beach, added: “We saw last year how successful the open player trial was with Dec and Jake earning playing contracts after they demonstrated what they could do. Brad Howe, although he didn’t come through the initial trial, came to us mid-season, had a crack, enjoyed it, and will be integral for us in 2023.

“We had other players that were important for us in the early part of the season also come out of the trial.

“The first trial was a bit of a journey into the unknown for us because the club was new and hadn’t played any matches. But now we have a full season under our belts and the progressive nature of our project has been clearly demonstrated, we are certain that interest will be high for players to show us what they can do.”Players wishing to attend the open trial are invited to submit only their name, age, mobile number, e-mail address and playing position to .
