Club Statement: London Skolars

September 15, 2023

Cornwall RLFC are saddened to learn that London Skolars have informed the Rugby Football League (RFL) that they will not be participating in Betfred League 1 in 2024.

The capital outfit will forever be etched in our club’s history as they were the first side we ever defeated in the Duchy – Cornwall prevailing 35-10 back in February 2023.

Then, in the return fixture at the New River Stadium in July, Cornwall were 30-14 victors, thus securing the club’s maiden league double.

We wish London Skolars well for 2024, playing in the Southern Conference, and hope our paths cross again in the future.

The news of London’s withdrawal from the professional ranks was confirmed earlier today (Friday) after a meeting between current League 1 clubs, those confirmed as participants in 2024 after being relegated from the Betfred Championship, along with clubs that may be relegated after the final weekend of Championship fixtures.

After this meeting, the RFL released a statement which said: “While it is disappointing to lose London Skolars from Befred League 1, their intention to play in the Southern Conference League in 2024 is welcome as it would add to the strength of that competition, and ensure that the Skolars continue to offer a playing and development opportunity in the Haringey and wider north London area.

“Discussions have already begun with the other Betfred League 1 clubs about the impact on their 2024 fixture list, with a range of options to be considered.”
