Betfred League 1 – Round Two Preview

March 5, 2023

Midlands travel to Dewsbury today – SWPIX

After a break week owing to the Challenge Cup, Betfred League 1 action returns today with four games taking place today.

Owing to West Wales Raiders’ demise over the winter, with the Rugby Football League opting not to alter an already provisional fixture list, two sides will sit out every week. For round two, those sides are Cornwall and Workington Town.

Rochdale Hornets, who can call on ex-Choughs Joe Purcell and Cole Connolly, will finally begin their 2023 campaign when they welcome last season’s grand finalists Doncaster to Spotland. Gary Thornton’s side have impressed throughout pre-season, but standing in their way are the in-form Dons.

The visitors head into the fixture with two wins from as many games in 2023 after they defeated Hunslet 18-16 on the opening day, before triumphing against fellow third-tier side Oldham in Round Two of the Betfred Challenge Cup last weekend.

Oldham will also play their first game of the season this Sunday, when London Skolars are the visitors to the Vestacare Stadium.

Stuart Littler’s Roughyeds have recruited well in the off-season and will be hoping to bounce back from their loss at Doncaster last week. The capital outfit,  meanwhile, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Workington in round one and will also be looking to return to winning ways on the road.

Elsewhere, Midlands Hurricanes who defeated Cornwall 40-6 in round 1, travel to Dewsbury. Both sides are in good form after winning their last two games, but the Hurricanes will be without key player Elliot Wallis due to suspension. The Castleford Tigers flyer, who was one of four players from the Super League outfit who took to the field against Cornwall, has coped a five match ban for a below-the-belt punch on Charley Bodman two weeks ago.

Liam Finn’s Rams have scored 38 points in both of their opening two fixtures so will be confident of producing another impressive display on home soil today.

Finally, Hunslet and North Wales Crusaders will meet at the South Leeds Stadium, with both sides aiming to earn their first league wins of 2023.
