Betfred League 1 Round Three Preview

March 19, 2023

Toby Brannan and Rochdale travel to Midlands Hurricanes – SWPIX

Three Betfred League 1 games take place this afternoon with one Round Three match already complete with Hunslet travelling to London Skolars yesterday.

The Parksiders kept up their impressive start to the new campaign with a convincing 66-22 victory. Former Chough Nathan Conroy was amongst the Hunslet try scorers with Alan Kilshaw’s men led by Adam Ryder’s hat-trick.

For Skolars, who travel to the Duchy in seven days time, their winless run this term continues.

Today, league leaders Dewsbury Rams will travel to Workington Town, as the two relegated teams from the Championship in 2022 battle it out.

The Rams head into the game in good form after winning their last three games in all competitions with a Challenge Cup victory against fellow League 1 side Rochdale Hornets last time out.

Like the Rams, Anthony Murray’s Town will be looking to immediately return to the Championship this term, but they’ll have to bounce back on home soil after suffering a narrow 24-20 defeat at Doncaster in the Challenge Cup last weekend.

Elsewhere, Doncaster host North Wales Crusaders. The hosts, who are many neutrals’ favourites for promotion, have won their opening two fixtures, whilst the visitors are still without a win in the league this season.

North Wales winger Rob Massam can reach 200 career tries if he manages to score against the Dons on Sunday.

Finally, Midlands Hurricanes host Rochdale in the final League One fixture this weekend. Midlands, due in no small part to their Castleford Tigers dual-registered quartet, defeated Cornwall on the opening day. They also reached the fourth round of the Challenge Cup with an ill-tempered 19-12 victory at Orrell St James last weekend.

Rochdale, meanwhile, who boast former Cornwall players Joe Purcell, Cole Connolly and Toby Brannan in their ranks, were defeated in their only league fixture so far this season and have already been knocked out of the Challenge Cup. Victory this weekend would be the perfect way for Gary Thornton’s side to kick start their season.
