Newcastle Thunder head coach Chris Thorman

Ground: Gateshead International Stadium (11,800)
Coach: Chris Thorman
Captain: Nathan Newbound
Season 2023 Finish: 14th Championship (relegated)

The very fact that Newcastle came to tapes for 2024 has to be considered something of an achievement for the North East outfit.

Thunder were awarded a place in the Championship late in 2020 after the demise of Toronto Wolfpack. And for the following campaign, 2022, the club went full professional in an ambitious bid to regain their Super League status.

But at the conclusion of that term, director of rugby Denis Betts left Kingston Park and the club reverted back to a part-time model.

Last year, Thunder struggled and finished at the foot of the Championship table. After relegation was confirmed, the club initially indicated that they wouldn’t play in League 1 for 2024.

However, the club was saved and after starting the season at Kingston Park, have now moved back to the Gateshead International Stadium – their original venue.

Quick Newcastle Facts

  • The club were handed a place in Super League for the 1999 season, under the coaching guise of Shuan McRae.
  • But after just one season, Gateshead merged with Hull FC and the club started from scratch again for the 2001 Northern Ford Premiership season.
