Midlands Hurricanes

Midlands Hurricanes’ Jon-Luke Kirby – SWPix

Ground: Alexander Stadium (18,000)
Head Coach: Mark Dunning
Captain: Matty Welham
Season 2023 finish: 8th League 1

The play-offs are undoubtedly the aim for Mark Dunning’s charges during 2024.

Last term, the Hurricanes finished level on points with Cornwall, achieving five wins from their fixtures, only finishing above the Choughs on points difference.

It will be a third different home venue in as many years for the Hurricanes, with the side moving to the main Alexander Stadium, the venue for many track and field events in the 2022 Commonwealth games.

Head coach Dunning will once again be pinning his hopes on several dual registration partnerships although, in 2023, it could be argued that this particular type of arrangement had mixed results.

Of the permanent members of Midlands’ squad, Jake Sweeting is certainly one to watch while the Welham brothers (Matty and Liam) are exceptional performers at League 1 level.

Quick Midlands Facts

  • An eighth placed finish in League 1 during 2021 was the best ever finish for the old Coventry Bears since they were admitted to the professional ranks in 2015. This was matched by Midlands in 2022 and 2023.
  • Coventry reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup in 2018 before they were beaten by then Super League outfit Widnes Vikings.
