Cornwall RLFC

Midlands Hurricanes

Ground: The Alexander Stadium Warm-up Track (TBC)
Head Coach: Richard Squires
Captain: Chris Cullimore
Season 2023 finish: 8th League 1

It was a tough first campaign after rebranding for Midlands Hurricanes as they recorded six wins from twenty regular league games. This resulted in an eighth placed finish, equalling the clubs best ever campaign either as Coventry or Midlands.

It wasn’t just the logo, club colours and name that changed for Midlands last term as they moved from Butts Park Arena to Portway, home of the Birmingham and Solihull Bees.

And in 2023, the Hurricanes will play in another new venue, the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, which hosted last year’s Commonwealth Games. However, Midlands will play at the venue’s warm-up track, with limited facilities before moving into the main arena in 2024.

Forever etched in Cornwall’s history after Midlands were the Chough’s first ever home opponents, Hurricanes’ coach Richard Squires has kept the bulk of his 2023 squad together.

He has added Italian back-rower Jacob Beer, who made a handful of appearances for Cornwall last season, whilst the club continue to rely on a dual registration partnership with Super League side Castleford Tigers.

Quick Hurricanes Facts:

  • An eighth placed finish in League 1 during 2021 was the best ever finish for the old Coventry Bears since they were admitted to the professional ranks in 2015. This was matched by Midlands last term.
  • Coventry reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup in 2018 before they were beaten by then Super League outfit Widnes Vikings.
