Without sounding like a stuck record, could 2023 finally be the season the Dons leave League 1 behind for promotion to the Championship?

A solid finish to Doncasters 2022 season saw them finish fourth and since their relegation from championship in 2015, they have only once not found their way into the end of season play offs, but could go better and return to the second tier after an eight year hiatus.

Reaching the play off final in 2022, Doncaster’s hearts were broken after a narrow 16-10 defeat to Swinton Lions. The Dons took the lead at Heywood Road thanks to Jason Tali’s 19th minute try but Swinton hit back when Jordan Case strolled in under the posts and the conversion saw Swinton lead 6-4.

The two sides traded scores and with the final siren approaching, Swinton led 12-10. Doncaster, pressing for what surely would have been a winning score, coughed the ball up in midfield and Jack Hansen, who has now joined Sheffield Eagles, scored out wide to break Donny hearts.

Quick Doncaster Facts:

  • The Dons spent a single season in rugby league’s first division for season 1994-95. Sadly, though, this would be the last season Doncaster would play at their beloved Tattersfield ground.
  • Legendary former Great Britain skipper Ellery Hanley coached Doncaster during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
